Orakei Korako – New Zealand’s Hidden Gem

Being at Orakei Korako (The Hidden Village) is like being in another world. This stunning Rotorua attraction offers so many once in a lifetime experiences. Orakei Korako has the most active geysers of any geothermal park in New Zealand, as well as being home to boiling hot springs, mud pools and surrounded by native bush. It doesn’t stop there, though; Orakei Korako also boasts having some of the largest and most amazing silica terraces in the world.

In the 1800’s a moderately sized population of Maori people had gathered at Orakei Korako, attracted not only to the beauty of the area but also the warmth offered by the hot springs, using them to cook their food. The start of the 1900’s brought European settlers, passing through Orakei Korako while travelling from Rotorua to Taupo. The Tangata Whenua (People of the Land) provided waka to cross the rivers with and by the early 1900’s the Orakei Korako area has been established as a geothermal visitor’s attraction. Fast forward to December 1937, Orakei Korako was officially opened as a tourist resort and is still open today with the same beauty and serenity that it held in the 1800’s.

Take the family and even the dog (Orakei Korako is pet-friendly) to see the stunning sites on display here, and while you’re there stop in at the MudCake Café for a bite to eat or a latte. If Orakei Korako isn’t enticing enough yet, they also offer a 10% discount for all Guests of Palm Court Rotorua. This stunning natural wonder is only 45 minutes from Rotorua and can be accessed via car, float plane or helicopter.
